I forget how behind their growing season is compared to me, even allowing for when it was filmed.
Still an enjoyable half hour though. i-player is useful. J.

Finally managed to watch it on catch-up today. What a great programme, they managed to pack more into half an hour than Gardeners World has managed all series. Even though I live in the sunny south-east and am several weeks ahead of them I'd still rather watch Beechgrove than GW, which has become dreary, dull and boring now Monty's back.

The same garden, the same presenters and not a ego amongst them they even showed you the backroom staff and they do trials as well..nice touch .
I like Beechgrove a lot.

But why has no one mentioned that Beechgrove didn't put any names of the plants on screen (yes I know they're probably available on the website) yet slated GW for not doing it.
There is this bias against GW.

Does anyone know what channel number it is on Sky - I forgot about it yesterday, and I can't put it on Series-Link, cos I can't remember where it is.

According to Wikipedia:
Sky: 971
Freesat: 960
Virgin Media: 862
Talk Talk: 956
There's also iPlayer, which is how I watch it, but unlike Gardeners' World, the episodes expire after a week.

Penny - Beechgrove publishes a comprehensive factsheet every week. Yu can subscribe to receive it by email or see it online. They remain available throughout the season.
GW doesn't do factsheets. Also, GW always used to have the botanical name on screen and people now expect it.

Normally shown on Mondays, 7.30pm on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú1 Scotland (Sky 971). The first episode was repeated the following Sunday on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú2 Scotland at 5.30pm (Sky 990), but not apparantly for episode 2, shown last night.
Probably best to consult the Beechgrove web-site, as programmes in last year's series were moved around in the schedules quite frequently:-

Loved Jim last night when he was planting his tatties " ........if you have been metricated "- its 30 cms great . BG at its best, like pulling on an old pair of slippers but you learn a lot as well especially from the trials.

I enjoyed it too. They pack a lot in without seeming hurried or skipping steps and info.
I can't buy those compost/growing medium mixes here but it's going to be interesting to see how they all do. Here in Wallonia I can buy compost for box, ericaceous plants, geraniums, seeds and cuttings, tubs or general use. I don't think any is peat free and they certainly haven't been sterilised to kill weeds seeds.
I loved the good clear seed sowing and pricking out instructions too and the garden design was very well done and both helpful and good fun.

Really enjoyed it this week. They pack a lot in without being hurried and cover all sorts of gardening styles and situations. Brilliant.

While GW is geographicaly more relevant to me and i wouldnt stop watching it, I enjoy watching Beechgrove more than GW these days.
Not sure what it is that makes beechgrove better or more enjoyable. perhaps its the garden itself with all its different areas or the presenters or something else. What appeals to you about Beechgrove over GW, particularly amoungst us fans 'south of the border'?
I so wish England could have its own version of Beechgrove. Either make GW like Beechgrove or lets have a new and seperate show for England (and wales).
Link to this forum: Beechgrove Garden Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú1 Scotland 19.30
S4C has a programme "Byw yn yr ardd" (living in the garden) which is nothing like GW or Beechgrove . It does have some gardening tips and garden related topics but they are not detailed enough and sometimes the information is not correct. (I watch it to try and improve my Welsh)

For me it seems more like a "real" garden with "real" gardeners who sincerely want to impart knowledge and help to other interested gardeners both new and old. They cover so much in such a short programme and the trials of plants, compost, methods etc are particularly interesting and useful unlike GW.
Shame as you say for us down South being 3-4 weeks late but more than compensated for by the presenters, format and content.

I lost a lot of respect and trust for GW because oF the Joes allotment BS,case of how can we sell another book...

You are right with reference to GW cannot seem to relax or enjoy the show somehow I don't know if it just CK's hype, Monty's patronising & relevance to most gardening items or Joe's in your face barrow boy style but certainly do not hold a candle to BG - both presenters and content.

Another excellent show that should be shown UK wide and the grill holes in the hanging basket are to let air in for the roots.

I just watched episode 6 on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú iplayer (I live in Kent and don't have sky etc). Beechgrove completely wipes the floor with GW. Even though they are behind where I am regarding the seasons it is so much more relevant then GW.
The trials along make it really useful advice especially for gardeners like me who have a tiny garden so no room to conduct our own trials. I also liked the fact they were planting up a hanging baskets and talked about the different ones available etc. It seems crazy to me that GW sometimes tries to pretend bedding and hanging baskets don't exist. You only have to walk around your local area to see this is what most people grow.

I live in hampshire and have been saying this for weeks- can someone at the bbc please take note and broadcast this programme nationwide- i don't find they are much behind me as regards climate although they may have different frost windows and I always find something relevant-but is it one of those hidden gems that would only get spoilt?

We finally managed to work out how to get Beechgrove on Sky and record it. Sat down with Mum and watched it and we were amazed by the program.
How can they manage to stuff so many interesting things into such a short program?
We watched it again to make sure we noted down all the bits we liked.
Wow - what a program!!!
But then that's what everyone's been saying.

You can download a fact sheet as well, it is simply a good gardening programme for Gardeners and not a programme where the presenters think they are more important then the gardening....

I too live in England - Derbyshire to be precise. Beechgrove complements rather than competes with GW. It deals with gardening issues which GW generally doesn't, such as comparisons in growing conditions, growing media, pests and diseases, garden design aimed at the general gardening population level rather than grand designs. I'm not knocking GW, I think it's excellent (when it's on that is and not playing second fiddle to sport), I just don't see why we can't have both available across the UK.
I would also like answers to:
1) why Beechgrove is only available on iPlayer for 7 days when GW is available for all the season
2) why it's so difficult to find Beechgrove on iPlayer. It's not available through "Search", and it's not available through Lifestyles-Gardening. You have to go to GW and then scroll through the similar programme section

1) why Beechgrove is only available on iPlayer for 7 days when GW is available for all the seasonÌý
Beechgrove Garden is an outside production not made by the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú. Contractual and broadcast rights will effect this. Seven days is the standard duration of availability on Iplayer.
2) why it's so difficult to find Beechgrove on iPlayer. It's not available through "Search", and it's not available through Lifestyles-Gardening. You have to go to GW and then scroll through the similar programme sectionÌý
Using 'beechgrove' as the search term brings it up fine.
(There is a very small window of time between episode A being no longer available and episode B becoming available in which Iplayer will return no result.)
