I am sure Monty said not to bother deadheading daffs - just leave them to die down naturally. I have always understood that stopping them developing seed helps them produce flowers the following year rather than going 'blind'.

And did I see him watering with a hose? On GW he always used a watering can - never a hose to be seen, which I thought was OTT political correctness.

Hi , Yes Monty did say not to dead head the daffs. I aways believed exactly what you say. I have religiously been doing this every day. whenever I needed to.

I think because Monty seems to have a long term view of his garden. I think he is thinking that they will self seed, and is not worried about the regular flowing of all the daffs. And is not worried it may take years for then to flower . But if you want top blooms I would dead head.

Then he should remember his audience and explain.

Quite right Clearance, as the above link confirms.

I am sure you didn't mean to sound so superior over us mere gullible mortals. The reason so many of us have fallen for that Victorian myth is because so many 'experts' have told us so (see below), and your comment might have been better aimed at them.

Monty is correct daffs do not need dead heading. the only reason to dead head is appearance only it has not effect on next seasons flowering at all. Another Victorian myth dead an buried. To bad so many people believe those old myths.   I have tried both ways and older daffs such as Stella do not seem to mind. But many of the modem hybrids did not do as well the next year. I gave both groups the same treatment.

Apparently many hybrids are sterile anyway and don't set seed. I have read somewhere that many hybrids just don't last so long anyway.
Alan Titchmarsh and the RHS both say it's not necessary to deadhead. AT apparently did a trial a few years back and found there was no difference.
I will deadhead anyway. The old foliage looks bad enough, but faded flowers on top just make them look even tattier.

Anyway I'm sure Wordsworth didn't go about deadheading his, he just enjoyed them,
