Monty's comments about how long it will be before a particular feature will be at its best, say 50 year's time, is interesting and one that not all casual gardeners, or onlookers appreciate.

The example of the Oxford college fritillaries meadow ,pictured by herisabee on one thread is a splendid example of what has certainly been passed down from one generation of guardians to the next, with great pleasure.

I am just reorganizing my own garden after 50 years og good use by my Late Ma.
I would gladly have left it as it was; she had some interesting wild flowers but
most of them have gone under the garden fork, in order to escape the ravages of road noise from a very near by "B" road, which was never intended to have such heavy traffic on it, and still isn't. I have dealt effectively with the air pollution but not yet with the noise pollution, which will be done in due course, but meanwhile

I have had to re plan the level of the garden, regenerate the species of tree in the garden and so on. I' m half way through after 18 months.

One smart alec/ass comes along and says "Why bother ? It will only be demolished to make way for a larger house after you have gone."

I do bother because all gardens have potential, and this one is no exception
    for the next 50 years.

I am starting to use the cold frame brickwork NOW which was last used in about 1958. I hope I am doing something right.

Having a splendid 50 year old, 15m yew hedge as air pollution protection is no compensation for losing a 1000 year old yew tree through questions of boundary to predatory townees on the make. Of that I am deeply ashamed.
