Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú4 9pm tonight. Apples: British to the Core. Chris Beardshaw finds out how Britain has helped shape the apple, visiting the original Bramley apple tree, discovering what drove Victorian horticulturists to create so many varieties.

    Thanks for pointing this out.

Here's one I will be watching with interest. Firstly because the subject matter is close to my heart and secondly, it is being presented by someone who (refreshingly) knows what he's talking about.
I suspect the name James Grieve will figure in there somewhere.

It was an excellent programme - really informative and inspiring. Chris Beardshaw was his usual excellent self at presenting.

Yes, I agree. I expected this to be an excellent programme and wasn't disappointed.

I know I'm sometimes critical of certain presenters, but Chris Beardshaw was (as always) impeccable once again.

CB clearly knew and was enthused by his subject. I think it was a stretch to assume the apple tree in the very denuded orchard was the one he remembered from childhood, but fascinating to see how the research chap traced its ancestry.

Funny that Brogdale didn't get a mention (though it was there in the credits) and a shame he didn't get to taste the cider!

Yes, a very fascinating programme especially the part about the original Bramley apple tree. East Malling was well featured and of particular interest as it's only a couple of miles from me. It was also interesting to hear the old gardener say that Laxton's Epicure was the best apple for him. We had one at our old house. It only seemed to fruit every second year and I don't remember the apples being at all memorable.
