I'm confused or perhaps totally wrong, but.... isn't it illegal to recommend unregistered pesticides?
If so, why was a home made garlic product recipe for slug and snail control featured on the programme?
Perhaps someone from DEFRA - CRD was watching and will enlighten us.
Only one ingredient was used - garlic. Adding water and heating doesn't count - I think. Now if they had added another active ingredient that would have made it an illegal pesticide.
Given the length of stems of MD's 'March sown' sweet peas (3 or 4 inches), I pretty sure they will be all over in a couple of weeks.....however often he picks them or how often he waters them.
With stems around 15 inches + long, this is one day's cutting of autumn sown sweet peas.
My sweet peas have short stems, I just thought it was the variety, they were spring sown , is that why?

I found this on another forum
Perhaps I'm being a little naïve here, but I really can't see any dire consequences resulting from using the water from a boiled edible bulb to spray non-edible plants.
Incidentally, it's a remedy that has been around for yonks!
Sorry to hear that, Kate....I could enlarge on the subject, but probably wouldn't be appropriate on this thread.
One of the principal chemicals in garlic is Allicin (Allium comes from the Latin word for garlic).
The effect of the chemical, in garlic, is precisely to prevent the plant from being eaten by pests, because it is toxic to insects.
The UK's principal lily supplier has a webpage, which includes tips about detering red lily beetle. They say: "spraying with crushed garlic in water has been suggested by some of our customers".
More about the chemistry:
Also, the use of Allicin as a commercial crop insecticide is patented:
"The invention provides methods for: (a) protecting agricultural crops, particularly fruits and vegetables, against insects, by treating the crops with allicin prior to harvesting; (b) protecting fruits and vegetables from decay and extending the shelf life thereof by treating the fruits and vegetables with allicin after harvesting; and (c) repelling insects such as ants or insects that attack agricultural crops from an object or an area, which comprises treating the object or area with a repelling effective amount of allicin"
After hearing the tip from Jekka McVicar during Chelsea, I've been using a garlic/water 'tea' on my roses to defeat greenfly, and it seemed to work. Using in the blackfly on my wife's dahlias did not work so well though.

I just cringe!
Plenty on t'interweb about making up a mix of garlic water, liquid soap and mineral oil as a general insecticide.
But when is a pesticide not even a pesticide - surely when it's used to simply repel organisms, rather than kill them?
