Hi. During last week's programme Joe mentioned a plant at the back of the Newby border and then Carol refered to the same plant in the Hyde park / Piet Oudolf garden. It sounded like yew/por/tor/ium but I don't know the right spelling so can't fine it. Can anyone help? Thx
Hi, it's Eupatorium - pronounced exactly as you have written it.
A tall, hardy herbaceous perennial (dies back to ground level in winter), reaches a good six foot or more in late summer. Clumps up well, but not invasive.
The most common one is E. purpureum, but E. cannabinum is also good - not as tall, different leaf shape and paler flowers.
Great for hoverflies and to a lesser extent bees.
Thanks for your reply and the info. I hate not being able to look things up and this has taken away my frustration.Looks like the type of plant I would like and could make use of. I loved those borders at Newby, really inspiring. Thanks again
