On the One Show tonight, a speaker on the wild life item said she put something in the birds'' feeder that squirrels don't like but birds don't mind. I didn't hear what it was and I wonder if anyone one else did. Hope so.

It was spoonful of chilli powder mixed with a cageful of peanuts.
Chilli powder is a squirrel deterent recommended by the RSPB.

Or you could encircle the feeder with a piece of larger mesh the birds can get through, but the squirrels can't. Cheers, Tony.

I bought a suet block of bird food that had chunks of red chillies mixed in it. The birds didn't seem to mind but the squirrels liked it so much they were fighting over it! Maybe the powder works better.

I’ve got fat balls. The birds like to nibble on them. Do you think squirrels would nibble on them too?

Hello everyone : No sign of a blue tit since then but I noticed a squirrel chewing at the metal container a. week ago. I had to sneak up to the glasspatio doors, fling them back, and add to the swooshing noise they made to stop him. He fell down the pole and sat at the bottom, too afraid to move and I wished I had a handfrull of gravel to throw. I had to do it for several days. Then I found one of those christmas cracker furled up noise making blow things and used that. The squirrel hasn't been back since then. But still no blue tits.
btw did you catch an item of news about the price of peanuts rocketing. Can't remember why.
I know I had one of the caged feeders and have been determined to find it rather than buy another. I think a whistle would be cheaper.
