I must say I was really disappointed with how the building of Monty's pond was presented. I know the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is desperately dumbing down, concentrating on the what, rather than the how, but there was virtually nothing on the how, when it came to the pond. I had hoped for some discussion on the type of pool being built (fish, ornamental, wild life, etc) and how this might affect the depth profile and planting. Something on how to fit a pond into an existing garden, maybe linked into Joe Swift's garden design series, would have been useful (Monty apparently just built the biggest he could fit in). It would have been good to see how to go about digging a pond, creating levels and how to dispose of the earth (Monty's pond just miraculously appeared at the end of one programme). And then, when it came to hiding the liner edges, Monty conveniently found several tons of cut stone lying around his garden - not something often found in the average garden. The whole purpose seems to be to show how wonderful Monty's garden is, not to instruct the viewers how to achieve something similar.

I can't help thinking that Geoff Hamilton would have done it so much better. In fact he probably did. Any chance the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú repeating some of Geoff's old Gardeners World programmes?

Thing is, if Monty had said "now I would use stone to hide the pond liner- but as I haven't got any, I've used this pair of bedside table lamps I no longer need"- you'd have been going crackers! Of course Monty would have stone about, or, like everyone else, he'd buy it in. Did you want to see the lorry arrive? See if there was a crane to look at? Maybe someone grunting as they handballed it up the garden?

if you want to learn about installing and planting up ponds, read a book. Do a course. Look on the net. Enjoy the entertainment and the pleasure Monty gets from his garden. What a nice fella- what a nice way to spend half an hour of a Friday night. Its not like he's gardening in Bahrain or something is it. Its TV. Suspend disbelief. Enjoy your pringles.

By the way, I thought it quite incredible that Bilbo just hapenned to stumble at the right spot where there was a ring- and it just so hapenned to be a magic one! Come off it Prof Tolkien! Do you think we're stupid or what?
