Hallo everyone on the gardening messageboard.
Just wanted to let you know that Dig In is back, with a new and refreshed site, and five new vegetables. It's all at
This year we'll be helping new gardeners grow french beans, courgettes, mixed salad, basil and Chantenay-type carrots. There'll be another seed giveaway - we can't say quite when yet, but we'll make sure they arrive well in time for planting. On the website we'll have animated advice on growing the veg, plus a new section on how to grow in even the smallest spaces. Plus Dig In will be touring the country again too - details can be found on the On Tour page.
We'll be linking through to this thread from the Dig In site to send new growers your way - we hope you'll help them out with some of the questions they're bound to have.
All the best
Dig In Ann
Looks good, nice to see that some of the suggestions I made last year have been used- some good varieties there.
I'm certainly happy to give people advice on growing all those things.

Thanks, that all sounds great!
I am helping and co-ordinating the start of a brand new new community allotment here in Clacton On Sea, so we will be looking for help and advice and the odd packet of seeds will come in very handy!
Cannot wait to get growing! The different ways in which to grow, pots, raised beds are very helpful. The seed giveaway is a great idea, any idea when we can register for them?
hello i would also like to know how to get free seeds and i love the short videos great for the kids to watch and copy.
Ping!

Hi all, I bought a greenhouse last july and was quite pleased with what I produced, having started relatively late. Now I know about this MB I'll no doubt be a regular asker of advice. Happy growing.

Let us know when the seeds are available
Hi I'm all very new to this!! Have just been watching CBeebies with my little one and they said to have a look on the website for some free seeds, how do I go about this (have looked on the Cbeebies website and there isn't anything on there to indicate how to do this...!!)
hi, if you go to the following web address, you just complete the registration form to claim your free seeds
www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/digin/apply_for_seeds
www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/digin/apply_for_seeds
Although I am close to 55 I am all new to the allotment I now have. I have lots of plants ordered and I am so pleased you are here to help.
That site is not open for business at the moment.
That's brilliant, really looking forward to it!
I really hope the seeds come out much earlier this year though. By the time most of us got them it was almost too late for them to catch up & months after their first possible planting dates.
So please make them soon!
Hi Parkesy,
Have you applied for your free seeds?, I treid the address you gave and got nothing.
many thanks leigh
Hi Foodchat, don't know why it doesn't work, but yes I have ordered my seeds. If you go to the cbeebies website, and click on the 'grown ups' section (top right of page) you will see an advert for the digin in seeds, you can either fill out the application form on line or post off for the free seeds.
Or simply click here...
Sorry, guys, but that link just takes you to the 'Too Early' page. Try this one and then click on the link in the text...
thanks oldends, parkesy
Hi Parkesy,
I have ordered my seeds now online, thanks for the help.
Leigh
Thanks DiginAnn and Parkesy.
So far my grandaughter (3) has grown a large pot of salad leaves and we all enjoyed the results, well into autumn.
Looking forward to seeing her face when the veg seeds arrive.

Just ordered my seeds
You have started a great hobbie with your allotment you will have years of good times ahead and make some fantastic new freinds This is my tenth year the guy on the next plot has been on it for 36 years and is always at hand for help if anyone needs it. Two plots away is a new gardner who has just taken on an overgrown plot he is a young lad of 22 and beleave me he will get all the help he needs from the other plot holders that is what having an allotment is all about just remember if you need help just ask so i wish you happy gardening and a good season
Thanks Oldends, got my order in now, much better than waiting for the adults seed section to open, last year that meant waiting for months while the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú sorted them selves out.
Hi, I would appreciate any suggestions which help solve my problem. My garden is tiny. I bought a greenhouse last year and it literally takes up all of my "garden". Everything I grow will be in pots or other containers so old compost needs to be recycled. I need a compact composter due to lack of space but I'm not sure which will be best for my needs, just that it has to be smallish and efficient. Any and all ideas would be most welcome.
Hi Jamie,
you might want to start a new discsstion that way more people will read it and be able to help you.
Regrads Leigh
Leigh, thanks for steering me in the right direction. Done now and eagerly awaiting responses.
Great selection of seeds, my daughter who is nine is so excited about plantting this year.
The main 'apply for seeds' page is now open. Go to
Hallo all
Yes, as some of you have noticed, the main seed application offer is now open - but for a limited time only, so get your seeds now. (It's at
We'd really love to get as many new gardeners as possible growing their own, so if you've got a friend or relative you think would love it if they tried it, give them a push to fill in the application form.
All the best

Hi All I to have just ordered seeds which use in our local community garden we are putting together from a blank canvas.
I have been on waiting list for half an allotment for two years and have been told there is at least another two years wait so I think its brilliant you will have advice on growing in small spaces as my garden is miniscule and I tend to use pots.
once i have planted my seeds in the propagator do i need to water them again

Hooray! - another excellent scheme to support new gardeners. I work with a number of organisations such as the RHS to develop a passion for gardening in children, through school gardens. I have a book coming out next month especially designed to help adults introduce young children to gardening through a range of fun and educational activities. Please take a look - it is call The Early Years Gardening Handbook by Sue Ward.
Thanks!!

Hello.
We received our Dig In seeds this morning; it was so exciting, expecially for our Little One. Unfortunately though we have only received 3 packs of seeds ... we've not got the Basil or Courgette seeds. (Must have been an oversight upon packing.)
Does anyone know who I should contact to obtain our missing packs?
Cheers in advance.
We have requested the vegetable seeds and in preparation have already made a raised bed for them. Will we have to protect the seedlings from pigeons and if so how is best?
Thanks
Hello everyone. I'm completely new to this having taken over a wilderness half plot allotment last year. By the time I had it tamed it was far too late to grow anything. This year is going to be my year. I have just been sent an email from my son with the Dig In free seeds offer. I've promptly sent for some. My plot is starting to shape up now as I've already prepared all my bean/pea trenches for later in the year and my first and second early potatoes are in the ground. Fingers crossed we have seen the last of the very cold weather.
