As a newbie allotmenteer I have garlic, onions (red and white) and shallots growing, planted first early and 2nd early potatoes, planted 2 rhubarb sets and sowed some carrots (fingers crossed for those!). In the garden I have autumn-sown garlic doing well and have sown lettuce seeds in a wide pot with copper slug tape around it. There are courgette and cress seedlings on my windowsills and pumpkin seeds yet to germinate (hurry up!)

Love love love this growing your own business.

May I suggest covering the lettuce, very cold nights still and also carrots, carrot root fly.
Well done, keep up the good work.

Ooh thanks grinling. I will break open the fleece. Sadly no poundland close to me but nearby Aldi stocks cheap gardening stuff.

    Know the feeling annaw1.

My garlic, onions, early peas are planted out and looking good. 1st and 2nd earlies showing through the soil. Courgettes growing nicely indoors with chillies, peppers and toms. Parsley and chives are doing well. Mangetout and petit pou hardening off in the plastic GH along with strawberries and mint which were there over winter. I've opened the GH early each morning when it has still been frosty because of going out to work but the days have been sunny so to leave it zipped up would mean them drying out.

At least half my sweet corn has germinated and I'm sowing flower seeds now.

Everythings still fairly small though I think that's because they went into shock when I potted up the seedlings into cold soil and the cat didn't help knocking everything off the window sill last weeksmiley - sadface

Round one germinating has been won the next task is to get the GH erected in time for plants to be going in there and round two will be planting out.

    Happy gardening and good luck.

Wow - I'm impressed annaw1 - I am a new allotmenteer as well - but I am still at the preparation/digging stage. I can't wait until this time next year, when things will be up and running. How long have you had your allotment? Mine has been two weeks smiley - smiley

Hi HappyDaffy. I am still at the preparation stage too! I was up there digging tonight. But I have cleared 2 areas and planted them up. I got my allotment in December and I can't believe I am still digging. But it is very exciting to see something growing. I would clear a small area and plant it up (with anything!) - it gives you a real boost.

Happydaffy! How can you have an allotment and not just be DYING to plant something???

I got mine in Novmber and forget the digging malarky (I have no patience) I covered the whole lot with weed membrane, laid out raised beds on top (£1.98 decking boards from B&Q...bargain!) cut out holes where the beds were, stapled the fabric to the inside of the beds. Lined them with cardboard to kill off the weeds, plopped in some garden compost, soil and after two weeks worth of work I have a fully fledged allotment with garlic, radishes, beetroots and brassicas planted out and salad leaves sown.

There's no fun to digging if you have no reward coming at the end. Cover a load with old carpet to smother the weeds and only dig a manageable sized patch but plant anything...it's good for the soul smiley - hug
