white sprouting broccoli

  Hi everyone, every year for the past 4 years i have tried to grow white or purple sprouting broccoli... or as my daughter used to call them (purple shouting broccoli), anyway i could not get then to give any heads, one year was cattapillers and then the birds, so autunm last year i brought some small plants and netted, pellet and stood guard all winter while they grew with some cabbage also and they have made it!! but they are only upto shin high and only had a few sprouty things off of one plant.. the question is.... when will they produce and how long for and when do i pull them up!!
  i think i will stick to the easy stuff!!! lol
