Hello CXan anyone suggest a very good variety of Cucumber to grow outdoors in a sunny spot? Had one suggestion to grow Cucumber masterpiece but wondering if anyone has had better results with any other varieties?
Hi
Outdoors, people often grow ridge cucumbers, of which "Marketmore" is one of the best known.
I`m no big fan of outdoor cucumbers but others suggest `Marketmore` or `Crystal Apple`
I have grown them and they are OK
smilingcat, is that because you cannot grow ridge cucumbers I grow Marketmore, there easy to grow and good cropers, and they taste better than greenhouse cucumbers
Glad to see good reports for Marketmore as I am growing them this year for the first time!
I've grown Marketmore and Crystal Apple and they were both easy, prolific and very tasty. Just like a good old fashioned cucumber should be. They have a taste that you just don't get in the supermarkert and so this year I am doubling my crop.
I grew F1 tasty burpless last year and that was great in both taste and yield. This year I'm doing a comparison of that one with Masterpiece and Bedfordshire Prize having ordered the last, got the second in a birthday card (!) and having some of the Burpless left over from last year.

I can,I have-I just prefer indoor types.
I grow marketmore outside and telegraph in the greenhouse. each has a taste distinct from the other.
The greenhouse ones tend to be slightly less bitter, so for salads I use the greenhouse ones, and for sandwiches the marketmore.
I agree with Saravisie - burpless tasty are the ones for me - kept the neighbourhood supplied last year and have them on the go for this year. I germinate them indoors, then they go out in stages to gh, mini gh, then into large pots which I stand on the shelving of the mini gh with covers removed. They trail down, are out of reach of "nasties" on the ground and you can rest the ripening fruit on the shelves. Nan x
We couldn't work out from the packet whether they needed support or not.
I planted them outdoors as ridge cucumbers but gave them some poles to climb in case they wanted to- they didn't!
Anyway, they still gave a good crop without a greenhouse and just grown in pots on windowsills prior to planting. 3/5 survived planting out (but then I didn't really have any way to harden them off properly!) and these gave me at least 2 cucumbers per week during August and most of September.
can someone please confirm what exaxtly are "ridge" cucumbers?
