Hi all,
I'm growing potato's for a competition but they seem to be doing very little with the cold weather.
Is there anything I can do or feed them to increase my chances of a good yeald?
I think you just have to wait for them to grow, Potatoes take a minimum of 12-14 weeks if they are first or second earlies and main crop take much longer so i think you will just have to wait. It all depends on what the competition is for is it for size or crop or the quickest to grow. Which ever its for you should have chosen the variety of potato to get the best result. All potatoes are different in size shape and crop also the time they mature. Keep them watered in dry spells.
It's a general competition, prizes for yeald, size etc.
I was given 6 seed potatos in March & we all get the same type. The judges come around to the house at the end of June & I lift them & they take them away results given at an evening gala BBQ.
When the potaotes are four inches high for a minimum of 6 weeks make sure the soil is always very damp as this will stop common scab. This is during the period of tuber initiation

Tuber initiation would also be a good time to feed. I use a seaweed derived liquid feed at this time and find that I get a much more uniform size of tuber. Good luck with the comp.
What potaoes were they and had they already been chitted. Unless they were an early variety they may not be ready by June if planted in March and not chitted.
