    Hi everyone,
    I have always wanted to get gardening and this year i am going for it. In my mini greenhouse i have sowed some different seeds. The radishes are now 5cm tall and my early nantes and herbs are emerging nicely. The brocolli is about 2cm tall with a couple of leaves on each. So the questions begin (sorry!)

    1) I have bought 2 troughs to replant in but they do not have drainage, does this matter or do i need to buy an insert?

    2)How long do i leave things in the seedling trays? Could i remove the radish now? Im worried that they are very close together (first lesson learnt- sow things further apart!)

    3) my silliest question; is there a method or certin way to remove the small plants from the trays in preperation for replantation?

    Any comments or advice would be most welcomed, thankyou

    Carrots and radishes are usually sown direct and I don't think they like root disturbance so I'm not sure about that one. Carrots, radish and brocolli can all cope with frosts so they can go outside whenever you like. They should already be fairly well hardened off from being in a unheated mini greenhouse.

    You will need some drainage in your troughs. If they are plastic it's really easy to just drill holes in the base or the sides, low down. I did this and I'd never used a drill before that! If another material it's more complicated. The problem is that if you get a heavy rainfall it could become completely waterlogged, even with an insert, as there'd be nowhere for the water to go.

    My Dad uses a spoon to remove seedlings from seed trays because it keeps roots together with some of their compost.

    These should have been sown where they are to mature.

    See here;

    and my early nantes

    These too should have been sown where the are to mature. You might get limited success by transplanting them but I wouldn't guarantee it!

    and herbs are emerging nicely.

    The brocolli is about 2cm tall with a couple of leaves on each.

    I am happy to hear it!

    do not have drainage, does this matter

    Yes!It is essential to allow the egress of surplus water.

    or do i need to buy an insert?

    Not sure what you mean by this????

    2)How long do i leave things in the seedling trays?

    Personally I would just leave the carrots & radish in the container they are in and see what happens! You might get mini veg!

    With the herbs & broccoli you prick them out when the 'real' leaves appear.

    3) my silliest question; is there a method or certin way to remove the small plants from the trays in preperation for replantation?

    You mean 'pricking out'there are a few 'slide shows here that may help;

    thanks for the tips.I guess i put them in trays first as it was warmer in my mini greenhouse. Could i atleast try thinning the radishes or just leave them?
    As for the brocolli; how when i know when the real leaves have appeared? and should i get them out of the seedling trays now before they get to big?

    The first two leaves of plants like brocolli (dicots) are the seed leaves or cotyledons. So the third leaf is the first true/real leaf. Hope that helps.

    Yep you could thin the radishes, the remaining ones will then be more likely to produce bulbs. Radish leaves are edible also but maybe a bit spikey. Cooked they taste like spinach.

    To prick out seedlings I use one of those tiny pickle forks!

    thanks, i had a look at he slide show, mine are well on the way to looking like that.
    There is so much to learn, i wish i had somebody to talk to near me! So just to clarify; i need to thin the brocoli into seperate pots and then transplant later? Or do i just transplant from the tray?

    Ill have a go at thining the radishes.

    Thanks.
