Good Afternoon ~ new to this board
I will be sprucing up a few just usable baskets. Clean out plastic lining with soapy water. Paint with either fence or decking paint, bought last year, but tins unopened. Last year the baskets had fuscia, lobelia, heather, viola and pansies (birdies and slugs got to the later). As did the snow :/
I have in mind growing a few vege, even if it is just tomatoes and herbs. Would be nice, if they looked good hanging on the fence, but obviously taste is more important. We use toms a lot, home made pizza, being a family favourite.
If there is a novice thread, could someone bump or me.
Lots of thanks in advance.

There are several tomatoes suitable for hanging baskets. Tumbler, 100s & 1000s, minibelle, gartenperle to name a few. There is also a cucumber called spacemaster 80 that is suitable for baskets. I got the cucumber seeds from premierseedsdirect on ebay. You could put strawberries in a basket too.

Thank you the2 jays, that will get me started.
Think I may as well look up basil for the pizza

You can sow basil seeds now - they need to be raised indoors - then harden them off before planting out in to your hanging basket.
I grow all my herbs from seed in tubs on a herb theatre in the back garden rather than on the allotment.

I have also plant courgettes growing in hanging baskets and clematis.

Hi you could try peas or climbing beans, although they need a fairly deep container/hanging basket for the roots but you can just give it a go and see!
not sure there is a newbie thread, just start a new discussion and ask whatever you want!
Sarah - what is a herb theatre? sounds interesting!

I got the plan for making a herb theatre out of a magazine a while back. Its sort of a cross between staging and a wide step ladder. Mine is 1.2m wide and each tier is made from groved decking so wide enough to put a good size pot on and allow for drainage. I have three tiers to each theatre - and I've got two theatres.
My husband made them for me - happy to provide a picture but haven't a clue how its made because we've lost the original plan.
My problem is that I've got a trio of chooks running around the back garden and they eat everything they can reach so pots at ground level would be useless.
Is there any way of posting pictures?

Thanks people ~ I have dipped into the Search Thread (A LOT) and made a little list of bits and pieces, to buy and collect, my work in progress (kind of):
Seeds 'and' plants, lolly sticks to label (buy lollies). Shall see what takes my fancy, but thinks I know what I want for now, re suggestions.
Clean out pots etc saved from last year, beg borrow and buy, trays or whatever. Soil, feed, nappy jel
Find out netting and voil leftover scraps, that may be needed, cant remember what for, erm to protect from beasties.
Marigolds, 1 tray (plants) 1 pair (hands)
I have got OH on board to make up a few shelves etc for to keep a few seedlings. We both work fulltime, so could be a challebhe starting from scratch as it were ...
Phew!

To mix in with dirt to put in baskets, contains water, usful for summer months. I went on the search facility thread last evening, there was a bit of debate on an older thread, as to whether it was best (hygenic) to recycle hardly 'wet' (used) disposable nappies or jel you can get from garden centres. It made me chuckle. I searhed for 'hanging baskets' and maybe 'tomato', then for similar posts to this one, etc.
The mushroom containers, you mean the usually blue in colour with a few holes at the bottom ? dont do take away, are you encouraging thee to eat cream cakes (tut tut )
I had saved a couple of bags of suitable plastic container stuff last year, not sure if it's at the back of the shed. Or tool store where the mice got at various bits and bobs.
Wont take long to collect more containers tho, looking round the kitchen, at half empty food containers. (dips, marge, mushrooms, toms, strawbs, wash tabs, icecream, etc)

I even used yogurt pots they good for single plant, my nephew went and got me 3 ikea large bags which iam going to use for spuds and made me wonder if the large laundry bags would do the same job, another thread mention about putting grow bags on their end so they stand tall put plants in. tomorrow as I pass a car park which as got a load of used bricks in a corner from when they knocked down a building Iam going to stop and ask if they let me have some to build a raised bed on a piece of concrete.
enjoy hunting

Some of my work colleagues have baked potato luches delivered in nice deep plastic boxes, complete with lids, about a quarter of a seed tray size - with a few holes stabbed in them they have made wonderful seed raising trays, and small enough for just a few of anything when a trayful would be too much.

Am collecting up all the spare containers, very odd collection it looks too. I will have to plan this a bit better. Been poorly and busy.
Im sure I read it isnt best to 'keep' seeds for too long. Im chuckling at this question, but can you actually freeze seeds?
