An allotment friend of mine recently gave me a massive clump of rhubarb he'd dug up and was surplus to his requirements. We don't know the variety. It had big tuberous roots on it, leaves and a few stalks. Very healthy.

I've transplanted it into a south facing area of my garden and prepped a large hole for it in v fertile soil to which I added half a trug of well rotted horse manure. I'm keeping it well watered.

It's taken to the spot v well and is thriving. All good so far ....

Here's my dilema: I've noticed about 3 healthy new fat "buds" coming from the crown but as well as these there are some that seem to be going into flower or maybe bolting and going to seed. Is this normal and what should I do about those stalks? Cut them off and discard them or just leave nature to do it's thing?

Although my allotment friend is my neighbour, I rarely see him (I'm guessing he's always on his allotment!) otherwise I'd ask his advice. I'm hoping someone here could let me know what going on with my new rhubarb.

It's normal for rhubarb to send up flower stalks, but best to cut them off, so that the plant concentrates on sending up stems, rather than trying to reproduce through seed.

I cut three flower stalks off my rhubarb last week, using secateurs; the stalks are fatter than the edible stems (which you just pull of from the base), which is why I use secateurs .

It`s perfectly normal as said above so just remove the flowering stems.

Rhubarb goes on for ever if you let it establish. Mine was on my first half plot in Leeds back in 1977 and the fruit of it`s off spring(root cuttings)are selling outside my house this very day

Thanks to both greeneddy & smiling cat. I'll cut off the flower stems. I checked again today. They are quite thick and nothing like the fruit stalks.
