    Dear All,

I have just taken on a half allotment, but it had not been cultivated for about 20 years (apparently) so was really just a square of grass with a rather lovely crop of dandelions smiley - smiley.

Anyway the person in charge of the allotments has asked the council and they have agreed to plow the allotment for me, so that will save me a lot of work.

So full steam ahead with planning what to plant and when. Of course I won't have my lovely beds with walkways between, but I am sure I can live with that!

    Hi,
I agree with shortspade I,m afraid. We had the same problem 2 years ago as did our immediate neighbour at the allotment. We decided to take it slowly and section off beds (just with canes on the ground) 2 at a time and give them a dose of roundup. Our neighbour opted for the ploughing method. We have had very little trouble with perpetual weeds apart from the glut in high summer, where as the neighbour never seems to be on top of his weed problem. I know it will put your crops back quite a bit but it will pay off in the long run. Good luck

I read in the paper on saturday than in France before they rent out allotments they clean it up, fence it, dig it, manure it even put a shed up and the rent is cheaper than Britain.

Personally I would say don't have it ploughed. The dandelions will come back stronger and more numerous. The best thing to do this year is to pick the flower heads every other day so they don't set seed and dig over the plots in small areas gradually. Otherwise you'll have weed problems for several years instead of just this one and maybe next.

Thanks for all your input. I have heard arguments for and against ploughing, as with all gardeners there are conflicting opinions! I don't really want to use Roundup - I really hate using chemicals. But again thanks for all your replies.
