i sowed some in a tunnel on 27 march
and more on17 april
germnation is awful
any ideas
Hi shortspade
I sowed mine direct during a lovely break in the weather 2nd week of April. Nothing. They are slow to get going but should be doing better under cover. Its not just the spring Os though. My broad beans and peas have hardly germinated outside and the ones that have are just sitting there. I also have my window sills full of corn, cucumbers, french beans and tomatoes all taking their time to get going. The rest of May looks just as bad.
Spring onions - I've got some grown from seeds on my windowsill that are now abut 10cm tall. Once i've hardened them off do i plant them like leeks - in a deep hole or nearer the surface like onions? I've never grown these before and can't find any instructions!
I always sow spring onion and radish seeds outside where they are going to grow rather then sowing them inside and then planting them out. You usually plant leeks deep because you want to end up with a nice long white shaft, which is not want you are looking for in spring onions.
I'm having the same trouble getting anything I've planted outside to germinate. Only 3 of the mangetout that I planted in April have come through and there's no sign yet of spring onions or carrots, although the beetroot is doing ok. Is it worth putting swiss chard and spinach seeds out yet or should I wait till it gets warmer?
I have planted onions, carrots, spring onions and radishes outside back in March. They have been slow to grow but now have very small spring onion, carrot leaves/grass growing. The onion has not appeared but the radishes are doing well.
I also planted some leeks and parsnips back in april but no sign yet. I just need to wait
I sow spring onion seeds in February in a tray and transplant them into ground when the weather warms up as I did during the Easter weekend.
I have had the same problems with my spring onions and most of the vegetables that I have sown outside. All the veg that I have sown in my cold frame and poly tunnel are doing really well. I thought it was just me, not really knowing what I was doing doh! Many of the other people on the allotment have been complaining about poor germination on all seeds from cabbages to lettuce, I've had to replant my broad beans and peas as either the mice got them or the weather stopped them from germinating, anyone else had these problems?

The radishes and carrots which I sowed in tubs (old recycling boxes) have all come up but the ones sown in the ground have not. I think the tubs are warmer. I am currently harvesting white lisbon spring onions which I sowed last autumn. They stayed fairly small all winter and then started growing again in April. I think I will sow a lot more of them this autumn than I did last year.
Could you tell me how deep you planted the spring onion seedlings - i do want a decent "neck" so do i plant a little deeper than normal ?
For those of you with non germinating seeds, the reason is that the soil is too cold. You need to cover with polythene sheeting to warm it up.
a good question
have you got a reply
You don't saw seeds deep but just under the soil. You draw a 'line' in the soil using a stick or a dibber. Water, sprinkle seeds, making sure you don't have too many in one spot. Then cover the line with soil. If you sow the seeds in a tray, it doesn't matter if you sow too closely as you will transplant them.
I have sown spring onions about mid April and they are now sprouting through the soil so hope they do ok now.
HI I SOWED MINE IN NOV IN A TUB OUTSIDE I COVERED WITH PLASTIC .WE ARE NOW EATING A GOOD SUPPLY FROST NOT BOTHERED THEM MY FIRST GO VERY PLEASED.LPASSO
