l was about to sow out runner beans / peas in the garden but l have been told l need to soak them in water and wait for them to sprout before planting out, or do l just scatter the seeds in a trench.
You don't need to soak the beans. Nor should they be sown outside just yet, unless you can give them some protection. I usually start mine off in large module trays or pots. When they are agood sieze I harden them off gradually and plant out at the beginning of June.
Or plant them in lengths of guttering, when they are up, just slide the set of peas into a dug shallow trench. Easy Peasy. Cheers, Tony.
For me it's a little bit hit and miss. it can work one time, then the next it won't. the soil temperture is the most important, if you are sowing outside, just make sure it's not too early to sow for the area where you are. if the soil is to cold the beans won't germinate. it can be an advantage sometimes to sow them in pots inside to start them off.
pellynut, again this depends on where you live, i planted my runner beans outside on April 10th, then started to transfer them to my veg plot last saturday, you just need to understand the area were you are,so June is a bit late for me
It is maybe a little early for sowing runner beans outside without protection, maybe another week will be OK as you can rush round and put something over them if a frost is forecast.
With both peas and beans you don't need to wait until they sprout before planting them but soaking them for 1hr or even overnight does seem to help them germinate more quickly.
