what is the best way to plant and support peas?I have started them off in trays and am going to plant them out this week.Do i plant in rows and how do i support them?
The 'traditional' method is with twiggy sticks pushed into the ground along the row of peas. However, these are now hard to obtain with farmers thrashing the hedgerows with hydraulic flails.
There is a plethora of different sized pea nettings available from Ironmongers and garden centres. Word of advice, don't plant the peas too close together. Cheers, Tony.
I don't plant them in rows, I make a shallow trench about 9 inches wide and scatter the peas evenly over the surface. I think they should each be 3 or 4 inches from other peas. When they're evenly spaced, I push each one a little way into the ground and then cover with soil. I put twiggy sticks in beside them once the appear above the ground. I grow dwarf varieties, but if they're tall peas you might need something more substantial like netting, in which case rows might be easier to support.
I support my peas on a small wigwam. I used to use short canes from the garden centre, but I managed to get some long branches when I cut back the hedge so I use them now. I tie the wigwam together with string at the top but I have to put a small terracotta pot over the top because the sparrows were constantly pulling at the string to add to their nests.
I support mine like this;

Tee Gee how do you support the tall ones or do you not grow them?
That is a beautifully neat garden Tee Gee!
I have only a few peas in my backyard garden. They are climbing up small wire wigwams and some stakes (not working well)

Generally speaking I don't grow very tall varieties.
I tend to grow those that grow around 3ft to 4ft high.
Having said that if I were growing varietes such as 'aldeman' I would just use longer posts and wider mesh!
I don't they are space for the supports Tee Gee uses so train peaqs up a wigwam of canes. I tie garden twine around the canes going up at intervals giving the climbing peas something to curl round.
Sorry meant to say I don't have the space for the supports Tee Gee uses.
They do look far stronger than mine though.
Thanks,I think i'll try your idea TeeGee.Looks good. The mesh i used last year was far too flimsy!
I've planted mine in small patches about 12inch square then bought one of those 3x cane hoops over the top with a dead silver birch twig up the middle. Then on chilly nights I wrap the whole lot round with some fleece. So far no frost damage.

This is the way we do it,tie strings between the upright posts.
Then when it comes to the end of the crop the whole lot goes in the compost where the strings rots away.
Fleeced up for these few nights of frost forecast.
TeeGee me thinks my supports aren't going to support the peas and beans I've planted.
Your small supports with the poles, how deep are the posts and your wigwam how deep are they.
I've planted out peas early, mangetout, petit pois and runner beans-scarlett emperor (latter still to go out)and I don't think ny supports are going to be big enough.
My wigwam's are more like teepee's

Sorry to not get back sooner but been quite busy on the plots!
The Smaller posts are 4ft long (120cms) x 3" (75mm) x 1¼" (32mm) They are pointed and driven about 1 foot (30cms) into the ground.
The bean supports are 8ft (2.4m) canes leant against a tubular cross bar, suspended on an A frame at either end.
The A frame is a recycled childs swing!
The canes are inserted 15-20cms into the soil!
First time I have grown peas as always considered them to take up too much space for the yeild and cost of frozen. Do I need to protect them with a net to stop the pigeons.
Yes a good idea. Sparrows can be a problem too!
Do I need to protect them with a net to stop the pigeons.Â
I never do!
I find the birds are not as great a problem in the summer as there is plenty of stuff around for them to eat. In Winter & Spring then thats a different matter!
I may be tempting fate here (am touching wood) but the birds never go near my peas, brassicas or strawberries. I think that they are so stuffed full of the running buffet on my bird table that they can't be bothered with the plants.
