my courgettes are growing nicely now with tow long furry leaves and two smooth ones. what will happen next and how long will it be before i see any vegetables grow?
They grow pretty big. They each need about a square metre growing space. They should not go out until they are strong and the weather is a bit warmer. They need very rich soil and to be kept watered. Once they have all that they will take off and start producing lots of courgettes. One of my plants produced 70 courgettes thats a record for me so be prepared for a good crop.
You didn't say if they're outdoors or under cover at the moment. If they're outdoors, it would be a good idea to protect them for a while until the weather warms up. A cloche made from the top half of an old pop bottle will do nicely, at least until they grow too big.
The first pair of leaves are the seed leaves, which are of no further use to the plant now. The inner pair will soon open to sprout more, and so on, and then in a few weeks, when the plant is much bigger, you'll see flower buds. The yellow flowers will wither and courgettes should form from at least some of them. By the second half of July you should be eating your courgettes, and by late September you'll probably not want to see a courgette again for many months!
Thank you everyone,
My courgettes are inside still but im going to harden them off soonn or maybe even tomorrow.
the two furry leaves are going yellow band the first two smooth leaves that grew are starting to die now. is this normal?
