Help, my earlies look as if they are dying! The leaves are drooping and blackish. Is this from frost and will they recover? I'm feeling gutted as I went to the trouble of getting the seed from Scotland at some pains. Can anyone shed any hope?
Yes, they'll recover
- after all, you never see potato fields covered in fleece!
Hope u r right Richard. They are Epicures and not available here in W of Ireland. I can recommend them as the best I've ever tasted. They are an old fashioned variety sadly gone out of fashion, but deserve a revival.
Pauline, you've had bad luck with the weather there this spring haven't you... normally very benign.
I'll say! Last winter was unbelievably cold and I've never seen so much frost. We hardly got any snow, it was too cold. My garden looked like something out of Narnia, it was white with frost, beautiful mind, and we got frozen pipes et al! Now we've got these cold northerly winds, I wonder if the cold wind is the culprit as I don't think we had frost here on the Atlantic seaboard.
I believe there is something like "wind scorch" certainly icy winds do nobody a favour!
From my experience it's just a touch of the David Jasons. Mine are a bit black on the tips just now but I think they will recover. Having said that, I have in the past lost a complete planting to Jack F due to planting too early.
I think fleece is a good precaution though.
Jim.
