Well, the ones I sowed 3 weeks ago aren't up yet, so I'm just about to sow some more. If they all come up I'll have extended the season. If they don't then maybe I'll have SOME parsnips this winter.
So my advice is go for it.
i would like to know this as well. i have sown parsnip seed and nothing emerging yet and that was a couple of weeks ago.The peas and french beans that i did at the same time have all germinated, i wonder if i have left it a bit late and perhaps should of sown the seeds direct.
It`s getting late but not too late to get a crop for Christmas and beyond. This season is about 3 weeks behind I reckon
Snap!
I haven't sown mine either, will do in about a couple of weeks time!
I read somewhere that you can sow the seeds inside provided you do not disturb the roots when planting out. I intend planting some this week into toilet roll holders or peat pots will that be ok.
snips take forever to germinate in my experience, then when they do they look remarkably like a weed that I have a problem with (no idea what its called) so I have to let them grow to identify them. Be patient!

Take three sheets of kitchen roll and put in an old ice cream tub and dampen it.
Space out parsnip seeds on it and put the lid on.
Check periodically - parsnips are slow to germinate - and when you see them shooting, sow them.
Use new seed because parsnip seed does not store very well and does not have as long a life as many others.
You may not have parsnips of show size, but good enough for the table.
Thanks for all your answers - guess what I will be doing this evening .

I live in Edinburgh and sow my parsnips as soon as the ground is workable . This year I sowed 12/03 , they were thinned to 10 cm at the weekend .Always sow thickly ; mark the row with radish as they are very slow to germinate ,the radish are ready before the parsnips need thinning .
It's not too late but try soaking the seeds in tepid water overnight prior to planting, as this will soften the outer seed casing and thus aid germination. Good luck.
For better germination put your packet of seeds in the freezer for two days then sow straight into the ground,I have never failed it is supposed to shock the seed into life.
