I got fed up waiting for my french beans to start sprouting, and bought 1 pot with french and 1 with runner beans. The runner has 2 beans clearly visible and 4 stems, the french pot has 5 stems though no sign of the seed. Is it normal for these plants to have more than 1 growing stem, or am I just lucky in having more plants than I expected? The pots looked very much like those which contained some seeds, compost and little other information. Also, would they grow happily sharing a such a small rootball or would I have to separate and re-pot? 1st time bean grower so any assistance would be gratefully receivedsmiley - ok.

Usually the growers put more than 1 seed in a pot, they are cheap enough and not all of them will germinate - often worth looking through the stock to get the best bargain - sounds as if you did well.

I would separate the seedlings, and pot on to grow alone, though some people do grow them in a batch and let them sort themselves out - the strongest will win.The runners will need a nice long tall climbing frame 2 at one point is not too much, I have sent 3 or 4 up the same pole, but it did get to be a very tangled mess at the top and did not make picking the beans any easier - also I suspect I lost alot because there was not room for them to grow properly.

Thanks bookertoo, I was hoping that would be the case. They were previously on sale as sealed pots but obviously curiosity got the better of some folks. I'll be getting them separated out and potted on this afternoon, as they all look fairly robust and ready to go. 9 or 10 already established bean plants for 2 quid, can't be badsmiley - biggrin

I have used this method for germinating runner beans, french beans and broad beans for years and I find it very successful. Get a large clear plastic bag, half fill with seed compost and put in required number of beans, shake up to mix beans and compost, dampen the compost, tie the bag and place in greenhouse. Usually sprout within a 7 to 10 days.

I have found that the beans in the potting have taken a long time to sprout. Finally a head is showing. The ones on my son's windowsill are huge.
