Hello, my broad beans are now in flower. Is it time to pinch out the tops thus reducing blackfly attack?
I have never bothered as the more flowers you get the more broad beans. I just attack the fly when they arrive with a hose so I will be interested to see what others suggest
Paul, I wait until they attack then pinch them off.....
I'd say wait until you get the first little bean pods forming.
I would say wait for the blackfly and then spray them with a soapy solution of washing up liquid diluted or just hose them off with a jet. It relies on you keeping a beady eye out and catching them earlier. No way would I pinch out as you curtail your crop!

I have still managed to get beans on black fly infested plants before as long as you manage to get the fertilisation underway before the fly arrive. Best of luck with your endeavours
Hi i wait till beans are 4 feet high approx then pinch out tops this lets the beans develop lower down the stems.
I let mine grow on until I am unable to resist putting the tops in a salad. They are delicious they taste like garden peas straight from the pod.

I don't think it curtails your crop at all. It allows the beans from the existing flowers to develop and then I've found that if the plant still wants to keep going it makes new side shoots and you get extra beans on them later on.
I'm growing climbing beans this year, so while in this thread could anyone suggest if they need pinched out, when and why?
They are currently about 6 inches tall with several true leaves, and have been planted out this week.
rose, I always grow a row of the climbing bean 'goldfield' and pinch them out when they reach the top of the frame
- having to sow a second batch as the first lot were germinated at home but then rotted in their pots growing-on in my (cold) GH
