Anyone tried surrounding their plants with flour? I've just put some around my dwarf beans as they are being munched by slugs and/or snails. Will see tomorrow morning if this has worked!
Hello, I've never tried this but anything that is going to dry their slime must be a deterrent. Perhaps the slug/snail will laugh and think to itself `do you want me to bake a cake.`
Oooh yummy - key slime pie!
Coffee grounds are not so messy and they do not like coffee.
Coffee grounds are excellent and will enrich the soil. If you live near a Starbucks, they give it away in bags. With any luck, they have them near the door so you dont feel obliged to buy a coffee!
Where I work the staff canteen is run by Costa Coffee. I keep trying to remember to ask them if I can have their spent coffee grounds but only remember at times like this when I am in bed checking out the gardening message boards!
I have been keeping coffee granules am going to put them in growbag where my two ickle cucs are. Do I mix them with the soil? Or just sprinkle round the top.
Sprinkle them on the top.
I've just inspected my plants and it looks like the flour has worked (providing of course that the weather stays dry, I suppose). Incidentally - do yellow leaves mean that I have over-watered? I fear I may have been rather zealous in the early stages of their development.
2nd night slug free, so I think my flour experiment has worked. Can anyone help re yellow leaves. Have I over-watered? Thanks
Yellow leaves could be lack of nutrients. If you have just planted them out from pots they may need a diluted feed just to give them a boost.
I sowed the seeds direct into manured beds with blood, fish and bone added, so am a bit puzzled as I'm sure there are enough nutrients in that lot.
They should have enough nutrients from what you say. Is the bed free draining because if you are overwatering it may not be draining from the roots. If its been dug well it should be free draining.
Yes - they are raised beds so I'm sure drainage isn't a problem. They seem to be slightly greener now that I've held off watering for a couple of days.
If it rains on the flour will you get glue? If so maybe the slugs will get stuck!
and if I put oats round the plants, I could end up with snail porridge!
