Hello, i thought i would start a thread for general hints and tips for growing peppers/ chillis. I planted 30 red pepper ("Californian Wonder" i think) seeds at the end of April, the seedling are growing well (about 20 of them germinated). I am growing them in little pots on windowsills atm so they stay warm.

Tips on types of soil, pots, garden position, pests, how to get a big crop would all be very much appreciated!

I`ll start with pests-peppers seem to be martyres to fly.

I'll take no credit for this but Bob Flowerdew on R4 today was saying that peppers like hot conditions but their roots like to be cooler. I'll try anything once.

I had to eventually give up on my indoor Demon chillis last year due to whitefly. In spite of squishing, spraying them with washing up liquid, then proper insecticides the max allowed time for food crops, they just had too good a hold. My outdoor ones never came to much either.

I have chillis & peppers in the greenhouse this year so fingers crossed for a better year.

I've heard that red spider mite can be a problem too, so water misting can be worth doing once the weather gets really hot.

I sowed my peppers (Cayenne) in pots quite late (not on purpose, I forgot) last year - can't remember exactly when, but I took them indoors In October and they started to ripen come November. I overwintered them on the kitchen windowsill (South West facing) and they kept growing and
have now flowered again and are setting fruit already.

I had no trouble at all, no pests, I'm going to be sowing a new lot
end of the month - I think this will give me an almost constant supply of pepper from green to red to dried!

I'm interested to see if I run into problems this year.

The first year I had wonderful dragon chillis growing in pots along the south side of my garage. We can get very strong winds racing down the east side of the Rocky mountains. Came home from work one day and every single plant hand been ripped to shreds. Since then I have always planted them in the ground and staked them well. Right now mine are still in pots and put in the greenhouse at night.
