This is my first year at growing veg etc and am enjoying it so far.
I have room in a grow bag in my yard and was wondering if I could grow spring onons in it? I`ve got salad leaves and radish in one and as I only have a yard am not doing to bad with what I have planted already in pots.
Has anyone any suggestions as to what I can put in my spare growbag???
I'd suggest a courgette plant. It'll give you about 10 courgettes and you should be able to buy plants around now as it's about the right time to plant them. Just bring them in if there is a late frost at all.
Grow only what you like to eat. You can grow most things in a grow bag. You could get 2or 3 tomatoes in it if you put them in pots into the grow bag. You could grow spring onions and a cucumber. Most salad you could grow. Are the bags in a sunny spot as you will need some sun for tomatoes. You must keep the bags watered as they do dry out quickly.
Thanks, have got spring onions and salad leaves and radish in at moment but have a growbag spare and may put tomatoes in it. I have some Gardeners delight growing so could try them. I wondered if Lettuce could go in one but perhaps it may be unsuitable.
Thanks for your help.
Sue58 Lettuce would be fine but if you want to grow tomatoes i would put them in pots or put the grow bag on its narrow side so the compost is deeper. This way you will be able to put a cane in for support. You could get 3 toms in a grow bag.
Have decided to do lettuce in growbag and put tomatoes in pots. Have got 2 tomatoes in grow bag cut in half and upended so very deep to see how it goes as experiment. Can only try and compare with pots.
Thanks for your advice it`s appreciated.
Never thought of cutting the growbag in half good idea. Hope its all successful.
One idea I read about (but have never tried) is to lay the growbag over a low fence or wall so that it hangs across like a saddle. You can then make a hole in each side and grow something like a bush tomato in each of the pouches formed by the bag. It would look a bit odd at first but might be rather nice when the plants grew up a bit.
Now that is a fun idea. I have been planting them narrow side up this year, too soon to say much about it, for strawberries. We will see.
I am definitley doing toms in pots this year, don'tgrow courgettes, but the idea of a saddle bag with say tumbling tomatoes and possibly a small grapefruitsized pumpkin......hmm, will look into that idea.
Sue58
think I'll try cutting grow bags in half and standing them on their ends, apart from having more room to grow for the roots they will take up less room, I grew two tomarto plants per grow bag last year and the bag seemed far to shallow for the roots and the compost dried out far to quickly.
I was also going to try growing 3 plants in a bag but plant them in bottomless pots so the roots have more room to grow downwards.
Sue58 going back to message 1.
I grew peppers in grow bags last year.
Only thing was they didn't look like the ones in the shops as they were all miss shaped and alot smaller so I was a little reluctant to pick them and eat them, they'd turned red by the time I plucked up the courage but they were ever so nice in salads, roasted and cooked
