My new greenhouse has been erected (8x6)
Is it best to grow straight into the ground or to have it slabbed over and grow in pots etc..
Any advice greatly appreciated
Regards, Parkesy
Mine is all 'paved' apart from a 30" wide 6ft strip on one side where I'm growing 4 melons and one cucumber on strings.
I was told not to grow cucumbers and melons in the same greenhouse because of cross pollination.I have a wooden base in both my green houses.I always grow in grow bags.No need to change the soil, just empty the grow bags on the garden at the end of the season and get new ones next year.Keeps things sterile.
I'm no expert but I think that a greenhouse is a good breeding place for soil borne diseases as well as plants. I mostly grow tomatoes and cucumbers in mine and I use rings about 8"-10" high sawn from those blue plastic barrels that seem to be found on all allotment sites. I place these on the ground and fill with soil and leafmould topped with sterile compost so that weeds don't grow. I usually plant three plants to each ring. At the end of each season it's easy to clear the whole lot out and start afresh next year.
Mine has a solid concrete base, personally I wouldnt want a soil bed in it.
Much depends on what you intend to grow. If it is just for seasonal plants then bags or pots are fine. If you want something more permanent, like a grape vine then you need a bed either down into the soil or a raised bed.Fumigation can be done when the plant is at it's dormant stage so there is no need to worry about the build up of bugs. I have had greenhouses for about 30 years with beds in them and have had no problems.

Thanks everyone
