I need some advice, I have some super leeks that I planted at the end of last summer and they have thrived growing to about 18ins to 24ins high. I have noticed over the last few days a stem has come out of most of them with a yellowy swelling appearing. Are these flowers and does it make the leeks compost material?
Simple answwer really.
Yes, they are flowers and Yes, you should pull them and compost. They wont be much good for eating although I guess they would be ok for making stock with.
Just my opinion

Thanks for the advice, I feared that might be the case
What you are describing is the leek producing a seed head, why don`t you let it grow and produce your own seed? It will develop a flower, let this mature, when it starts to dry out it will produce hard black seed, tie a paper bag over the head and give it a shake every now and again till you have hundreds of seeds for next year.
Or just buy a packet !
It`s only a quid after all, plus you can use the space on your plot for other crops.
Just my opinion

Last year we had the most amazing indoor 'flower' arrangement in a vase in the firepalce space with leek and onion flowers!! Not only were the flowers amazing, but some of the shadow shapes were spectacular too. Everyone who saw it loved it, and no, the room did not smell of onions or leeks!!
Of course this is not what is useful to you crop wise, but is another way to enjoy your flowering veggies!
