What's the bast way to grow tomato's? Books I've read recommend 10 inch pots but then how can a growbag be deep enough too? Am confused, please help! smiley - smiley

I cut the hole in the grow bag as normal, then cut the bottom off a 10" pot and place it in the grow bag hole. Then I put the tomato plant in the pot.
This has worked well for me in the past. It helps when watering because the water (and feed) has a chance to soak down through the roots instead of going all over the place (which has been my experience when just cutting a hole in the grow bag.)
    Hope this helps

I don`t like gro bags-but I`ve seen good crops in them.

I use 10 inch pots with the bottoms cut some years and just plant into the soil others.

The extra large grow bags are OK, used with a pot as described for developing feeder roots, turn the bags on their side and cut 2 holes and plant in those - this gives the tomatoes a better root run. Most grow bags suggest three plants but two gives you so much better a crop that it really is worth it. I am trying srawberries that way this year too.

Having said that, over the last few years I have gravitated towards pots, they do give the deeper root run, and are more easily moveable if necessary. I feel there is less wasted compost and feed too. I use 14 inch pots, in the greenhouse, tying canes to the staging for support.

Me too. I don't use growbags myself but some really experienced gardener friends use them every year with great success. The main disadvantage is they do need a heck of a lot of water every day in the summer.

I've had good results with both, however now use pots. The reason is that you can space the plants further apart to improve air circulation to help avoid blight. In grow bags the plants tend to overlap each other and removing all the leaves from one side seems drastic.
