I've tried potatoes in my new polytunnel with Maris Piper in sacks, planted 6 weeks ago. They sprouted strongly and I've continued to top up with compost and watered regularly. Now they are 18" out of the top. No sign of flowers yet. Do they have to flower and then wilt before being ready??? Yes, I'm new to this.
Jeb, 3 of my potato plants are on the verge of flowering into bloom. They've been in the ground for 77 days now. It's a good marker for when your new potatoes are nearly ready when they start to flower. Also they normally take around 90 days, but remember the soil was colder this spring due to the colder winter, and depending where you live, you might need to keep your spuds in the ground a wee bit longer. So just pull one stalk up when the time comes to check if they are ready
Another thing, you should not water your potatoes at all. They like drier soil. Only do this if we are in the middle of a drought. Potatoes will be drawn to the surface by using your hosepipe. Only allow natural rain to water them. This is why some people get green potatoes. If you must, you have too drench them. I've got a soil moisture reader very helpful. The last time i watered one of my crops of spuds was 6 years ago i believe?
