We have (at the moment) 4 plants. They have performed brilliantly and we've had several serving this year of large, delicious spears.

When we looked at them the a couple of days ago we were horrified to find several of the new spears were yellow/white and the stem sort of flattened, with a hole up the middle. They looked thoughoughly unwell. Other spears on the same plant seem OK, but may just be slightly older. Nobody else on the site seem to have the problem.

We have watered during the dry spell, (not too much everything else is OK) and given a little fertiliser, not much.

We can think of two possible reasons.
There has been a mole up the side where most of the trouble seems to be.
The weather has been particularly bad of course, and our plot seems most exposed on the site.
Then there are things like violet root rot etc.

I'd rather not dig up the whole bed to find if the roots have been infected until all other avenues have been tried. Not all the spears seem affected yet. (cross fingers)

Does anyone have any clues, and HELP! please.

    Lottie

If you are in a windy exposed area and the stems have no cover they could rot from being rocked about. Late frosts can also damage spears.I would remove all affected spears and see it new ones grow through o.k. It could be the weather. If the new ones seem affected it may be worth checking the roots. I would not panic just yet as we have had such bad weather. You should not pick after July and you need to let some stems go to fern so i hope the new spears are healthy.
