Hi, yesterday evening I planted 2 containers with chantenay and Paris Market 5. The fresh compost was mixed with silver sand, and seemed reasonably moist so I watered very lightly. Today the surface looks hard and very dry. How often should I add water and how much?
I know not to water at the hottest part of the day, after that I'm struggling a wee bit. All help gratefully received.
In weather like this it can be tricky, too much watering, and you can rot the seeds. Too little when they germinate, and they will die due to lack of water. Try to keep them in partial shade if you can, as for the surface of the soil resembling a hard crust, this will happen, due to it being this time of year,
Thanks Rob, if the beeb 5 day forecast for Brum is right we'll have some heavy rain tomorrow and Sunday, so hopefully mother nature will come to the rescue.
Hi, I have been growing carrots in tubs for the last 4 years, I use grow bag compost on its own & it works ok. I water at the end of the day sparingly even if its rained lightly as growing in tubs seem to dry out quicker. This year I sowed early using Flyaway F1, which are supposed to deter carrot fly. I usually grow Early Nantes 5 which are great for tubs.
I soak the compost first before seedling. Lightly cover with fine compost then fine spray with water to settle the seeds in. Then keep in partial shade and or cover with shaded glass or sheet of polythene to keep moisture in until the seedlings are 'goers'.In sunny weather, I use a fine water spray regularly to prevent the drying out you mention. Reseed the surfaces (an cover lightly)where germination has been patchy.
