Hen blackbird that is, she has completely destroyed two pots with basil growing in them, soil was everywhere. Luckily they had just started to grow. Chicks must have hatched so she's off the nest and looking for food. Main veg garden soil is too hard so she's decided to find softer soil up on the patio, cheers smiley - ok Just been making pots blackbird proof with empty buiders sand sacks on the top, i hope smiley - erm

I've just got basil germinating - third time lucky! Twice I've sown and it has come to nothing - though goodness knows why!

Re the blackbirds: they are nesting in the beech hedge (though they think it's a secret, since they never fly directly to the nest). Mrs B keeps trying to boss me around and make me dig over some more soil for easier access to food.

Since most things are set/planted now, she's out of luck - except I keep putting food out - and she's doing well, and, I presume, so are her brood. (Doesn't stop her trying her luck in the GH border, though!)
