Hi
We have two courgette plants. They seem to be producing fruit but they are dying off and going soft at the flower end when only 3inches long. I'm picking most of the small ones, but any I leave on to get a bit bigger seem to suffer this fate.
What am I doing wrong?
Most varieties of courgette require to be pollinated to produce fruit. Normally bees do it, but it may help to hand pollinate the fruit.
are the plants well watered in this hot, dry weather?
how is your courgette fruiting already?
when did u sow yours?
Hi there, yes i have one fruit on mine too. My question is now i have finally worked out which are male and which are female flowers do i have to nip the male flowers off as they are proliffic compared to the femaleflowers/fruit?
yes and peel the petals back and brush the male flower into the courgette flower. you will see there are as many male stalks-very thin. as there are actual corgette stalks-thicker behind the flower
make sure you water only the roots as courgette plants dont like being wet. i suffered last year like this and wound up with hardly any in the end, watch out for powderey mildew the leaves go all white and the planted gets stunted
Thanks all. I'm careful not to water the leaves and only the roots. I thought that if the female fruit had started to swell behind the flower that it had already been pollinated?
If not, then I'll help the pollination along.
Am I supposed to remove the female flowers once the fruit starts to grow?
