how tall do the french beans from digin get because mine have been out for a month and there are the smae height.
also how do i avoid getting blackfly on the beans?
Mine too! Came back from holiday this weekend and noticed that one of the six bean plants has finally started to wind it's way up the cane. I'm hoping that they will now start and get growing. I've known plants go into shock and sulk for a bit after being planted out or moved... maybe it was something like that?
Yes, transplanting beans can cause them to pause their growth for a bit to get used to the new conditions- one of the reasons why I sow direct whenever possible. They will eventually grow up poles of about 2m. You wouldn't want them higher than that or you would struggle to pick them unless you're very tall!
I knew there was a 2nd question I'd missed!
I've not known blackfly to be a huge problem for french beans. It's more broad beans that they go for.
It is still a little cold for "Blue Lake" beans to be out in the big wide world. Mine are still in the cold frames where they are kept a little warmer.
I hope to plant them out later this week.
I must add that I'm in the north of England where it tends to be a little colder than the rest of the country.
As the weather gets warmer I expect that they will begin to grow up your canes.

I have 'Cobra' not 'Blue Lake' and planted them out two weeks ago and was worried that they didn't seem to be growing at all so good to hear that it's pretty normal for french beans after being planted. However, they are developing into really sturdy plants so hopefully will start racing up their canes soon.
i have a cold frame but its too small for the french beans.
Hi I planted my Dig in beans a couple of weeks ago also and they stayed the same height for about a week and a half and now they are growing really well. I planted mine next to 1.8metre canes and its says somewhere to pinch out the growing tips when they reach the top of the canes to help them to produce and also to stop them over growing the supports.
I live in the Northwest so maybe your beans will start to grow better soon
I check my young runner beans for blackfly every day and squash them as soon as they appear. That way they never manage to take hold. After a while they either give up or start getting eaten by something else. I do the same for greenfly on the roses.
