I need to thin my plums , I hate doing this , though it pays off with quality fruit. My Victoria is about 8 years old and is getting congested ,does anyone have thoughts on pruning and when is best to minimize the risk of silver leaf ?
Plums have to be gently pruned during the summer , or possibly when you are taking the fruit. Unlike other Apple trees and cherry trees which have to be pruned in the winter.
Plums are very sensitive trees, and we, my late Ma and I, have found that the one way to deal with them is Summer or early autumn pruning.
I've just planted another Victoria plum; it's going to be a good one. They do not live that long and they must be kindly cared for.
I hope you find the link below helpful, gaffelbiter.
I have heard BF, on Gardeners' Question Time, say that June is the best time for pruning plums and cherries, when the weather is DRY.
Good luck,
Artemis
gardda, you are right about plums being sensitive. You also brought back memories of our Victoria plum which gave us 30 years of fruit and many years of pleasure for the children on the swing. When it finally succumbed and we had to chop it down it turned out to be a fun time too. My late OH cooking and dancing to jazz in the kitchen and a daft lad and I sawing off the branch we were holding and landing in a heap. We toasted the old tree as we enjoyed the food.
Hope you have many years of pleasure from your new tree. You too gaffelbiter.

Many thanks to all that replied. I shall deal with my plum at the weekend ~ weather permiting .Good to know I can treat my Stella 5 cherry in the same manner. The links proved invaluable.Gaffelbiter.
