I planted a new crown of rhubarb in February/March 2009 and didn't pick anything from it in the first year, let it all die down and rot in on itself and mulch and fed with our compost and some chicken pellets.
This year it looks as though there are more crowns and looks really healthy, but after the first two pickings (we only took one or two stems from each base) there are still loads of growth, but the stems are now really thin, still taste wonderful, but very thin.
Is this usual or have I done something wrong?
I am looking to split the crowns into 2 or 3 in the autumn, but for now I'm trying to solve this query.
Thank you for your help in advance.
I inherited a load of rhubard on my allotment and there's a real mixture of big thick stems on some and long thin ones on others. I suspect it's down to the variety.
