How can I tell when my carrots will be ready for picking. The foliage is not particularly bushy but looks v. healthy.

    Many thanks

I pulled up a few Early Nantes today that I planted in a container on 15th March. The foliage was about a foot tall, I'd say. Two had quite thick strands of foliage just above the soil and the carrots were about four inches long. Not very big but substantial enough to look like a real carrot rather than too puny to eat. I reckon another week or two and they will be a good size. Very tasty it was too.

We pulled a third and it was too small and a bit pathetic looking but the foliage wasn't nearly so thick.

This is new to me but I think you just have to try one and see once the foliage gets to a good height. Someone more experienced can probably give you a more scientific answer than me though.
