    Hi everyone,

Rather this year I have a fox that comes into the allottment at any time of day usually accompanied by the same cat. As well as the smell and other "gifts" it leaves it does damage the plants.

I am also having a devil of a time with wood pigeons who have mistaken the garden for the local corner shop and strip plants almost as soon as I plant them out.

Amy suggestions for deterrents to these pests as it is quite disheartening after spending the winter clearing an allottment that had been out of action for years.

    Thanks

    Fred

It has been claimed that male urine, sprinkled in affected areas, is a deterrent for foxes.

For cats, I use a water gun - one that you pump up and shoots water for about 10 - 15 yards. The cats don't like it, and a hit gives you a big psychological boost!

Wood pigeons. Net the plants. If you catch the pigeons, there are some excellent recipes on the internet.

    Good hunting!

If you have a dog you could put some of its faeces at areas where the fox and cat access your allotment and refresh every couple of days. In my garden I put sticks with tin foil shapes on the end around my plants, for some reason they are scared of it. Both worth a try, they worked for me!.

I've had the same vixen visiting for three years [she has a very distinctive battle wound ] , she's very entertaining .Last year I observed how she would sniff the strawberries and take the ripest , how diserning is that .

Foxes are very clever. We have some living in the side of the disused quarry below our garden. Occasionaly the dog fox comes and sits on the fence, rather like a cat does, but usually we just see them passing through. They are quite aware that the security lights they put on pose no threat to them, and often look up at the window, as if looking to see if we are watching them. So far no problems with them, the fruits are either netted or in the fruit cage, and so they can't get at those - yet!
