I have five courgette / summer squashes in total which are all doing pretty well (touch wood), lots of leaves and beginning to have buds/flowers. However on two of them the stem is starting to split down it's length, starting where it comes out of the ground - does this matter? is there anything I can do to stop it getting worse?

The usual cause of longitudinal splits in the stems, is damage caused by rocking of young plants in the wind. Prevent this by using sticks or cloches to prevent wind damage.
Hi, thanks for your advice I wouldn't have thought of that, I will stake now. I take it the packs may still be ok in terms of producing crops even with the stem problem?

my courgette stems often split - windy site. Doesn't seem to affect them.
Mine too. Courgettes always seem to split and I wonder how on earth they can survive, but not only do they survive they give me more fruit than I can handle. Nothing to worry about in my opinion.
