" years of planting seeds and no sign of anything. No problem with anything else just beetroot. Can they be done from seedlings, I can't get plugs now too late?

Try sowing them in modules and planting out when there is a decent root ball. It`s not too late.

    Huh?
That's one of the easiest things to grow

It's not too late to sow beetroot, have another try. I can't think why your beets aren't germinating - they are usually very easy to grow. Are you being patient enough? They can take quite a while to germinate, but once they are up they go like the clappers. I did buy a tray of seedlings from B&Q one year after a neighbouring cat scratched all mine out, and they worked fine. Don't give up!

Mine grow and I harvest some of the larger, outside leaves for salads and cooking. my root balls are not too big. I have same problemswith radish too. I don't mind too much because I cook radish leaves and pods, but it would be nice tyo have some radishes too. What am I doing wrong?

As much as other people say they're easy to grow, I can't either!

Mind do germinate, but never swell to any size of root. I have the same with carrots, radish, leeks, spring onions too. No idea why, very frustrating it is though!

Everything above ground always looks marvellous & grows well, but I just have no luck with root crops.

I too could never grow beetroot. But this year I have had a fantastic crop. I did two things different - fertilised before planting and thinned out the seedlings.

Thinning is important-that`s why I now take the lazy option and sow in modules.

Mamta-it sounds as though your beetroot and perhaps more so the radishes are not getting enough water at a critical stage in their development. Have you tried `white icicle`?-they are not unlike mooli and go deeper than say a cherry type

My beetroot germinated and grew fine but the bulbs were disappointing. I think my soil was too rich. I planted my carrots in sandy soil with no fertiliser added and they turned out great. Maybe beets are the same, nitrogen promoting leaf growth and nothing underground. My mom says I must look for seeds of "cylindrical beetroot", not the normal globe ones, but I haven't seen that yet.

Goggomobil-I have been gardening since 1977 and I have yet to see a soil too rich for beetroot.

Beet-cylindra is not uncommon, its just a bit longer and thinner than globe types, well worth growing

Thanks 4smilingcat6, this (not enough water) makes senses. I had my flower beds raised a few of years back. The Landscape gardners (they shouldn't be calling themselve that in my view!), filled a lot of small rubble before putting in soil. I should have stood there and watched them smiley - doh! Water just used to go through the soil. Anyway, I have added a lot of compost since then and I have put a fair bit of horse manure this year. So, hopefully they will be better.
I have tried icicle radishes too, same problem, but they do gives tasty seed pods, really nice raw in salad or stir-fried smiley - smiley. So, it is not a total waste of time!
I have sown some cylindrical beet too. Let's see how that does. I could get seeds for these in most seed selling shops without any problems.

Strange how we all fare differently because like others I've never had a problem - they seem to grow like weeds!! Modules is the way I go now as already mentioned - sow 5 seeds in each (1 in each corner and 1 in the middle) keep moist and hey presto here they come. Even when I've had to rip them apart due to roots been inter-twined they still all grow, every single one of them. I transplant into rows with 1/2 inch of multipurpose compost (after first watering the trench) then backfill with soil. Water for a couple of days and after that they look after themselves just needing a drink say twice a week in this very hot weather.

My beetroots, having survived some leaf rot, are now catching up. There are small heads of fruit peeping above ground, should I earth them up or just let them get on with it? Also, is tomato food ok for beetroot?

Its carrots with me - I sow a whole packet, get a few spindly seedlings come up then over night they disappear - been 5 years in this garden and had half a dozen carrots! I've tried sowing them in the potato sacks, after harvest and exact same thing happens. Low germination then they just 'disappear' - my neighbour is a smirking witness to this phenomena smiley - grr

Is it beetroot that has a germination inhibitor in the seed skin, so it's better to wash them well before planting? Or am I on the wrong veg?
I've had disappointing results too. The first time I had lots of leaf but very small beetroot. Other times either nothing, or seedlings which just don't develop.

I soak coriander seeds sometimes, but I never knew that you had to wash any seeds!
I saw a couple of white Moolies peeping through the soil this morning. So may be the horse manure is showing results!
