Hello there, can anyone tell me how to arrange beetroot properly, this is my first time to grow beetroot and I am also a new beginner at growing veg, plus is it best to grow carrots in half clay half sand for better results, someone told me that was the best way to grow them especially against blackfly
    Thank you

Over the past few years i have experimented with root veg. Carrot root fly cannot fly above 18 inches so i grow mine in deep tubs. The tubs i half fill with homemade compost and the top half with growbag compost. I scatter my carrot seeds all over the top and keep them watered with a fine spray. I find they are not damaged by stones and they do not get attacked by root fly. They are also easy to pull out. Beetroot i grow in the ground their seed is easy to space in neat rows. Mark the rows with a stick and string so you know where they are planted.Space the seed about 2 inches apart to allow for growth. They are pretty easy to grow. They will grow in most soils if you rake it over to break it down a bit.

I grow my root crops together, I havent planted beetroot as I dont like it. But if I had some they would go with my carrots, sping onion, onion radish and potaoes. The onion smell helps to keep carrot root fly away. I think they would also prevent blackfly. The smell of herbs nearby helps to keep unwanted pests away like sage/rosemary/thyme/lavender.

This is also my first year of growing and I just harvest 3 rashises and 3 small new potatoes from my earlys for lunch. The only problem I have had so far is from slug damage, so went out the other night after it rained in evening and found the slugs were having a party, i moved them to my compost heap and now the replacements are doing well. I dont want to posion hedgehogs/birds so I dont use posion for slugs, Organic garden smiley - smiley

You can if you want to use the iron based or aluminium based slug pellets, neither of whoch will damage birds, hedgehogs or anyone else who might eat them, or the dead slugs - they are pretty well as efficient as the awful blue ones.

WE use no sprays or anything either, but as I want to grow hostas I have to do something, copper tape is a great help, plus the comparitively safe pellets have kept the damage to a minimum the last few years.

It's absolutely wonderful harvesting your first crops of the year isn't it? Nothing in the world like your own produce from your own garden or allotment, window box or pot - yummy.

A tip I read about years ago with slug pellet is to cut a hole in the side of an an ice cream carton, put the slug pellets inside with the lid on. Wildlife is safe & they don't get wet in the rain. Bonus as they do fill up pretty quickly.

It doubtless works, but has the same problem for me a beertraps, you've got to empty the horrid things, and it is on e of the few things I am squeamish about!! Uggh .......

Anyway, safe pellets do the same job with no nasty things to empty out.
