Hi, I am growing tomatos, chillis, peppers, french beans, sweetcorn, courgette, squash (summer and butternut), sugar snap peas and various lettuces all over which are doing pretty well alothough not too much to harvest yet. However I do have some space where I have harvested lettuces and where some early sugasr snaps have finished.

I have quite a few seeds left and wondered what (if any) was worth second sowing. I have seeds of:
    Sweetcorn,
    Patty pan squash,
Lettuce (I have loads of this on the go at the moment),
    Beetroot,
    French beans,
Sugar snaps (already have a second lot on the go)
    Chilli,
    Peppers,
    Cucumber,
    Salad leaves.

Any ideas? I live in the south and have a south facing garden so thought I might be able to squeeze in a second crop of some of the above?

    Lucy x

As everything in the garden started late this year I guess it is worth trying s second or even third sowing of most things - though I would feel it was a tad late for squashes, a couple can't hurt can it? Try and see?

Certainly lettuce, beans, radish and all the softer things should do well, especially if we get a good end of the year sunshine wise.

I'm going to sow some more tomatoes later on this month in the hope of extending the season. Probably something that will fit on the kitchen windowsill.

You are pushing your luck a bit but why not? Try something like `Tiny Tim` it`s flavour is not outstanding but it just might be cropping when others have finished and it`s better than supermarket toms

Something you could try to extend the season for tomatoes would be to plant up a couple of the side shoots. They'll quickly grow into plants and will be strong and healthy. You never know you could have tomatoes at Christmas. I've done it myself so I know it can be done although the fading light will most likely make the plant a bit leggy.

Whenever I find a gap I pop in a few radish seeds. I have radishes all over the place at various stages of development. I loooove radishes. They only take a month from seed to harvest.

    Hi Lucy,

If it were me I would put the seeds in and see what happens. Beans are fine set now - you will get a lovely late crop. Same with beetroot, peas, carrots, salad stuff (which can be set all year round.

I think it would be too late for sweetcorn, squash and certainly too late for chilli, cucumber and peppers. These are slow growers.

But why not have a go anyway, since you have the seed. If you live in a warmer part of the country and we don't get any early frosts then you may get some crop - particularly if you grow in pots and can lift the pots indoors in the autumn.

However it might be best to keep the seeds and sew them next year at the "right time".

Going to depend obviously on what the Autumn/early Winter weather will be but being gardeners and born optimists smiley - winkeye keep going with succession lettuces and other "quick turn-around" crops. If you have too many give away. Any longer term items will get more and more exposed to winds and frost etc.

I would go for it what do you have to lose. Peppers you can grow indoors I'm going to sow some this weekend for my kitchen, the ones in the greenhouse have flowered and all have lovely peppers on getting bigger by the day. I may try a couple of tomato plants too. Sweetcorn i am growing for the first time this year and it's huge, I'm not sure how long they take to produce it. salad crops lettuce yes I have just got some in this week. I have eaten the 16 iceberg I had they were scrummy,
so much nicer than in the supermarket very green and lush. The ones in the veggie bed getting eaten by us too so hopefully I can keep our family with supply all summer. Courgettes in flower, and strawberries just going red. Not a bad summer of production for me so far, my kitchen bay huge too. My son's school has asked me to help with the gardening club from next week so I'm feeling rather pleased with myself joanne
