My autumn-planted garlic has developed rust on the leaves. Should I lift it straight away or leave it in the ground a bit longer? Will the taste of the garlic be affected? Any advice appreciated.
Hi I just saw your post. I have a similar problem, but thought mine was leaf spot - are you sure your's is rust as I thought that only affected roses? Maybe we can help one another find a solution to our problem?
It's definitely rust - fits the description of 'leek rust' in my gardening book. This affects garlic, onions and chives as well. My leeks had it in the winter and I expect that's where it has come from, even though I planted the garlic in a different part of the vegetable plot. I'm going to lift a few of the worst affected and see if the heads of garlic are OK. If I find they have grown to a reasonable size, I think I'll lift them all. On reflection, with the leaves affected, they won't make much more in size anyway. I'll let you know how they look.
This is probably not the official line but I get rust on my leeks and garlic every year and still get pretty good yields/taste. My Dad is the same.
That's good to know. Thanks.
Well, I've just experimented by lifting the worst-affected plants. With little green leaf remaining, they weren't going to get much bigger anyway. They aren't enormous, like last year, but good enough. The heads of garlic don't seem to be marked. I'll leave the others and lift them as and when the rust gets worse.
It doesn't really matter if you get a bit of rust on garlic because you are not going to eat the leaves anyway. Mine got a bit last year and I still had a good harvest. They've got it again this year and I am not worried. My garden is so small that wherever I grow something it will not be that far from where it was the year before.
