I've got few that have popped up and I've put in pots, dunno why, but they are increasing ?
There are a few nearby but over a hundred yards away in the street. I'm sure I read somewhere that it's jays that plant the majority of oak trees, stashing them in the ground and then forgetting them, they are a very rare visitor round here so they must have got in some other way.
Pretty soon I'll have an embryo forest....in pots.
What will you do with your forest then, Martin?
Or will you cross that bridge when you come to it?
I'm 60 now so it'll never be my problem I half imagined I would find a home for them where they could live out their long lives.
You could try freecycle or your local schools (if they have big enough grounds). Seems a pity to waste them!
Could you grow them as bonsi!
I get quite a few little oaks every year, round here its the squirels that plant them!.I normally just pull em up but about 10 years ago i put one in a small pot and tried my hand at Bonsai. Worked a treat, had a lovely miniature oak tree until this winter. Give it a go.I wont go into the whole bonsai thing but its not that hard and you,ve alredy got a headstart. Just an idea!.
We collected conkers one year and grew them on into lovely little trees. We kept them going in pots and when our local park had a tree planting day we donated them all to them. The trees are now growing away into lovely trees and i hope they will still be there many centuries from now. As for finding trees we have many planted by squirrels that we have to take out. The trouble is unless you have a big garden they grow so big. I hate to dispose of and tree seedlings but you cannot keep them all.
I have squirrels as well so perhaps it is them planting them, I thought ( I heard on a wild life programme)they bit the growing tip out to stop them sprouting, and they are bring them a long way from the next nearest tree.
London plant mad....bravo.
What a fab idea...must admit we too have lots of little oak trees starting this year and i plan to nurture 2/3 to plant at the bottom of my plot as i do have room and i love the thought of leaving a thing of beauty for others to enjoy.
So any hints on nurturing eagerly awaited....
They do not need any real care. I just potted mine up in normal soil and kept then watered and weed free. I potted them on into bigger pots once they grew bigger. Don't forget Oaks grow very big and can be there for hundreds of years so unless you have a huge space i would think about where and how many you plant. You could always give then to people who have a big garden or like i did to the park. We are not allowed to grow big trees on our plots but we have them all around our boundary away from the plots.
