Last year I planted a gooseberry and a redcurrant bush. This year they are being attacked by sawfly

I am trying desperately to pick them off as much as I can, but have a feeling I'm fighting a losing battle .
What can I do to help it survive till next year? I have read that I should keep the soil clear around the base of the plant over winter, and try to spot it earlier next year. Is there any pruning or anything I can do to help?
At least the blackcurrant is resistant. Wonder what will get that
I had the same problem for a year or two after I planted gooseberries. I picked off the caterpillars and, the following spring, removed some of the soil round the plant and replaced it with compost. I have not had a problem for two years now (though maybe that's just luck). The berries themselves were OK. I have read that the problem starts in the middle of the bush, so maybe that's the place to keep an eye on before things get out of hand.
Well I want to just give up, but perhaps I'll be a bit more dedicated and hope that in a couple of years it gets big and strong enough to cope
