Just want to share my joy at growing veg for the first time on an allotment...

Potatoes seem to be growing well and I could do with digging one up.

Garlic, onions and shallots doing ok despite cat sitting on them.

Courgettes I grew from seed but went v. yellow when I planted them out, have turned a corner and are producing flowers and new, greener leaves.

Pumpkins growing well. Ditto spring onions.

Patchy germination from the carrots but doing ok.

Radishes, slightly nibbled, but doing ok.

2 of the purple French bean plants I planted out died in the unseasonably cold, windy weather in late May but the rest are growing new leaves and the ones I sowed, along with green ones, have all come up.

    Mange tout growing ok.

Runner bean seedlings coming up as are calabrese.

Picking masses of strawberries which I didn't even plant and can see raspberries and blackcurrants growing.

Have also recently sown beetroot, pak choi and lettuces.

No sign of the rhubarb or the courgette seeds I sowed direct, no apples this year and only 1 or 2 pears but such is life.

Sounds like you're getting a decent crop this year Annaw1.smiley - magic

I have had the same problems with courgettes this year and carrot sowings are a bit hit and miss. Have just got myself a huge tub and sown autumn king, so hoping that these might do better. I've also noticed that borlotti beans/purple french beans are not doing so well as runner beans/Green french beans. The beans have set, but will just have to wait a bit longer before I get to taste them.

It's great, isn't it? And that feeling never goes away - every year I am thrilled with my first peas or beans, the first redcurrants shining like jewels in the sun, the first clean potatoes. Never mind the weeds, it's the produce that counts!

We had potatoes swift, cavalo nero & calabrese for tea on Friday. Very satisfying, growing & eating.
