There have been some slugs in the polytunnels so I've put out some beer traps: that is, plastic yogurt pots with about 2 inches of beer in the bottom, and with the sides sticking up at least 2 inches above the soil, so I don't get ground beetles by mistake
Results? About a dozen drowned beetles and no drowned slugs. There were even some beetles in an unburied yogurt pot with a rim about 4 inches above soil level
So what did I do wrong? Don't slugs like good Galloway ale? I've reverted to leaving cabbage leaves on the soil and I get lots of slugs under them, but I've given up on the beer traps. Anybody have any suggestions?
Get yourself some frogsor like me invite the neighbours frogs over they love snails and slugs - I just find the empty shells from the party
I made a beer trap a few weeks ago using a yoghurt pot and a free can of beer that a kind Sainsbury's man gave me. The first week was great and lots of slugs dived in. Since then they all appear to have taken "the pledge" and turned their noses up at it.
I've had success with beer, but I've not tried Galloway ale. Beers that work for me include Special Brew - I think it's the strength that does it, it's important that they get drunk or they'll try to escape, and Wells Banana Bread beer, which seems to attract enormous slugs towards the end of the season.

i tend to vary what bait i give them sometimes it's beer sometimes its cider and i allways manage to snare some but it's just a case of this battle won but the war is never over....
refuse to use slug pellets as i have cultivated area for hedgehogs and other wild friends
Interesting replies - thanks a lot. I may try again with some stronger beer, but if I keep catching beetles I think I'll give up
